Granth Kutir is a library of classical languages located in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The term “Granth Kutir” means a house of books and knowledge. Granth Kutir symbolizes India’s deep respect for learning, scholarship, and intellectual heritage.

With the objective of preserving and promoting India’s Classical Languages, President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu inaugurated Granth Kutir at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 23rd January, 2026.

Granth Kutir represents all classical languages of India—Assamese, Bengali, Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Odia, Tamil, and Telugu—each of which carries a continuous literary tradition spanning over a millennium.

Granth Kutir houses a collection of more than 2,300 books in all the classical languages. These works encompass subjects such as epics, philosophy, literature, science, religion, and bhakti literature among others. Important textual materials have been gathered from various parts of the country to enrich the collection. Taken as a whole, these works present a vivid portrayal of India’s ancient and unbroken literary traditions and reflect a cultural heritage that has been preserved and enriched over a period of more than a thousand years.

Granth Kutir also houses a valuable collection of 50 manuscripts, many of which are handwritten on paper, tree bark and palm leaves. These manuscripts possess exceptional historical, scientific and aesthetic significance. They showcase India’s multilingual and multidisciplinary manuscript tradition and stand as living testimony to the country’s knowledge systems. The creation of this manuscript collection has been made possible through national-level collaboration, involving contributions from state governments, eminent institutions, universities, research centres and individual donors.
